How to Arrange an Artificial Flower Bouquet at Home

How to Arrange a Faux Bouquet

There don’t need to be strict rules when arranging a faux bouquet - in fact, part of the joy is playing with the stems until it feels right. In fact, I spend more time than I care to admit playing around with the configuration of mine, and a painstaking amount of time designing beautiful bouquets that are easy for customers to style in their own homes!

But if you’re not sure where to start, a simple structure can help bring everything together naturally.

Below is the approach I tend to follow when styling faux flowers. Try it out and see if it works for you too!

Start with Your Vase

Before arranging anything, choose the right vase. This step is more important than many people realise. A vase that’s too tall or too wide can make even the most beautiful arrangements look awkward. A vase that's too small will crowd the stems, and one that's too large for the arrangement will make it look sparse.

Ideally, the flowers and lower foliage should sit comfortably around the lip of the vase, rather than leaving a big empty gap. If stems feel too tall, don’t be afraid to trim them with wire cutters (or bolt cutters which are stronger) so the bouquet sits at the right height and shape. Faux stems are designed to be flexible, so adjusting them is completely normal and often necessary.

Once your vase and stem height feel right, you can start building the arrangement.

If You Have a Mix of Foliage and Flowers

When I’m working with both greenery and flowers, I like to start with the foliage first.

The foliage creates the base structure of the bouquet and helps everything else sit naturally. Spread it out so it forms a loose framework rather than a tight bundle.

Next, layer in the smaller flowers. These help fill gaps and add texture without overpowering the arrangement.

Finally, add the statement flowers - the larger, more eye-catching blooms. These usually sit slightly higher or slightly forward so they naturally draw the eye.

If they are all large, statement flowers (or even if they're all small flowers) that's totally fine too. Try and spread them across the foliage to the flowers and colours are scattered.

I also like to play with asymmetry. Bouquets rarely look convincing if everything is perfectly even. Let some stems lean slightly, let others sit taller, and don’t be afraid to move things around for a while.

I love bending some stems downwards so they hang lower than the vase lip.

A bit of faffing is honestly part of the process.

If You’re Creating a Flower-Forward Design

If the bouquet is mostly flowers rather than foliage, I use a slightly different approach.

Start with the bushier flowers at the base of the arrangement. These create fullness and give the bouquet a strong foundation.

Then layer the taller, wispier stems so they sit above and around them. These lighter stems add height, movement, and softness, which stops the arrangement feeling too dense.

This layering helps the bouquet look natural and balanced, rather than flat.

Adjust, Turn, and Refine

Once all the stems are in place, step back and look at the bouquet from different angles. Turn the vase slightly and see how it feels from each side.

Small tweaks can make a big difference - adjusting the angle of a flower, spreading a piece of foliage, or lowering a stem slightly can suddenly make everything fall into place.

And remember: faux bouquets are wonderfully forgiving. You can rearrange them as often as you like until they feel just right.

Arranging faux flowers should feel relaxed and creative rather than technical. With the right vase, a bit of layering, and a willingness to play around with the stems, you can create something that looks beautifully natural in just a few minutes.
